Diving Sites - Power Station

The Power Station site is located off shore from the large powerplant west of Kyrenia. The site is situated in the sea about 1.5 miles north of the Power Station. The setting is somewhat exposed so check the wheather forecast before departing. It is some distance from the main dive sites near Kyrenia. You should plan in advance with you dive center to spend a day covering this site and the Plane Wreck off Esentepe. Although the site could be managed by beginners, the distance and exposed location would tend to leave this area for more experienced divers.

This is a large site and we would recommend two dives to cover the whole complex of rock formations. Rather than the classic reef structure, this site reminded us of three large pyramid rock structures with many other large boulders and rocks scattered about.

The tops of the rocks are at 9 meters and extend down to 30-34 meters. As you enter the water, drop down to 9 meters and fin to the north end of the site. The bare walls of the rocks are pitted with indentations full of marine life.

As you fin around the rock surfaces you will see striped groupers, moray eels, amberjacks, stingrays, seabream, parrot fish, priest fish and large schools of mackeral (especially in September and October). On the sandy bottom at around 30 meters you will find several rocks covered by colourful sponges filled with soldier fish.

At the end of the site where the grass begins, you will find a large cave at 31 meters. The wide entrance and interior of the cave is decorated with a variety of colourful sponges and small marine life. You will also see many black spotted nudibranchs on the sponges.

Moving further to the outer edges of the site you will start to see the predominant neptune grass. There are several large rocks situated in the grass. They are covered in large magnificent black sponges.

You can slowly ascend along the rock surfaces and enjoy the rich marine activity of this dive site. We never tire of this site. It is a little off the beaten track and thus the marine life seems secure and abundant in their isolation. Although we did not have the time, this site would also be an interesting night dive for the ambitious explorer.
